Aiken, SC-A celebration of life service for Mr. William Hubert Baker age 91 will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday June 14, 2022 at Cole Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David L. Holdman officiating.  Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery with military honors accorded by the U.S. Navy ceremonial team. Mr. Baker entered into rest Friday, June 10, 2022, at his residence. He was a native of Pound, Virginia, and had made Aiken his home for the past 62 years. Mr. Baker was the beloved husband of 66 years to Mrs. Charlotte Poole Baker. He was the son of the late David and Margie Lambert Baker. After graduating high school, he joined the US Navy and served during the Korean War. In 1957, he received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnical Institute (now Virginia Tech).He was then awarded the Atomic Energy Commission Fellowship and completed his Masters in Nuclear Engineering in 1958 at VPI. While at VPI, Mr. Baker taught thermodynamics and was Secretary of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, member of the Phi Kappa Phi, Secretary of Tau Beta Pi, and President of Pi Tau Sigma. In 1960, Mr. Baker moved to Aiken to begin his career at E. I. du Pont Nemours and Company at the Savannah River Plant and raise his children. In 1964, he was instrumental in the development and design of a reactor loading charge specifically for the production of Californium-252. He retired in 1992. During his retirement, Mr. Baker enjoyed teaching Sunday School, woodworking, photography, and politics. He was in the process of writing his autobiography and a commentary on the Book of Revelations. He was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family. Additional survivors include one son William Timothy (fiancé Brandy) Baker, Aiken; two daughters, Kathryn (Bruce) Berry, Evans, GA, Karen (Clint) Matthews, New Ellenton; two brothers,  Richard Baker, Knoxville, TN, Bobby Baker, Sterling, VA; seven grandchildren, Emily (Caleb) Willing, Scott Berry, Melanie (Luke) Fitzgerald, Zachary Matthews, Courtney Bayne, Rachel Baker, and Ava Baker; four great grandchildren and two on the way. Pallbearers will be Timothy Baker, Zachary Matthews, Luke Fitzgerald, Caleb Willing, Scott Berry and Clint Matthews.  The family would like to extend a sincere gratitude of thanks to Daybreak Adult Care, Sherry Eldredge, Pat Addy, Terri Johnson, Barbara Johnson, and Bonnie Self, and to Regency Hospice, Pam Randolph for all of the love, care, and support they gave our father and our family during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org. A visitation with the family will take place 12-2 pm Tuesday June 14, 2022 at Cole Funeral Home.
